What Utilities Am I Responsible For and How Do I Set Them Up?

2 min read

Your lease outlines which utilities you need to manage during your tenancy. This guide summarizes what services typically need to be set up in your name, which remain under the owner’s name, and what to do if you’re unsure.

1. Utilities You Should Set Up in Your Name #

Please set up the following utilities before your lease start date, unless your lease specifically states otherwise. Service should begin on the first day of your lease.

1. Electricity
  • Puget Sound Energy (PSE)
  • Snohomish County PUD (SNOPUD)
  • Seattle City Light (SCL)
2. Gas
  • Puget Sound Energy (PSE)
3. Water/Sewer
  • Only required in select areas, such as Bellevue. Refer to your lease agreement.
4. Garbage
  • Republic Services (unless the property is in Renton)
  • Waste Management (unless the property is in Kirkland)
  • Recology & Cleanscapes
  • Rubatino
5. Internet
  • Highland Fiber Internet (if the property is located in Issaquah)
  • Other providers may be available depending on location

2. Utilities That Stay in the Owner’s Name #

For most properties, the following utilities will remain in the owner’s name:

  • Water and sewer (unless specified otherwise)
  • Garbage services in Kirkland (Waste Management) or Renton (Republic Services)
  • City of Seattle Public Utilities (water, sewer, garbage)

In these cases, you may receive the bill either:

  • Directly from the utility provider
    or
  • Forwarded from GPS Renting

Regardless of how the bill is delivered, you are responsible for making timely payment directly to the utility company.

3. Move-In and Move-Out Utility Charges #

If certain utilities remain under the owner’s name, GPS Renting will prorate your share of the charges for the time you occupy the home.

If you receive a bill that includes service dates outside your lease period, please email it to utility@gpsrenting.com, and we’ll help correct it.

4. Unsure Who Your Utility Providers Are? #

If you’re not sure which companies provide service to your new home, contact us at utility@gpsrenting.com. We’ll be happy to help you confirm the correct providers and accounts.
